A second skin made of transparent polymer that adheres to the dermis to improve the appearance of wrinkles or dryness has been created by a team from the startup Olivo Labs, in collaboration with scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As skin ages, it becomes less firm and less elastic, problems that can be exacerbated by sun exposure. This impairs the dermis's ability to protect against extreme temperatures, toxins, microorganisms, and radiation.

About 10 years ago, the research team, led by Robert Langer, an MIT professor and founder of Olivo Labs, set out to develop a protective layer that could restore the properties of healthy skin, for both medical and cosmetic applications.

"We started thinking about how we could control the properties of the skin by coating it with polymers that would provide beneficial effects," explains Langer. "We also wanted it to be invisible and comfortable."

HOW DOES THIS “SECOND SKIN” ACT?

The product must be applied in two phases: first, a gel that must be spread on the skin like a cream, and on top of the gel, a product is applied that will give the first layer the properties required from it. When both components come together, the skin is tightened, giving it elasticity. A surprising elasticity and its effect lasts more than 24 hours and according to the first tests, this compound does not show any side effects.

Once applied it is invisible. An invisible second skin that is an exact replica of young, wrinkle-free skin. According to what they say, you can look up to 20 years younger. It reduces wrinkles and dark circles, according to what Nature Materials publishes in its article “An elastic second skin” in which it says (translated into Spanish from English):

“The synthesis and application of an elastic layer made with a cross-linked polymer (union of several polymers) is presented. In English it is “crosslinked polymer layer wearable (XPL)”. This elastic layer is capable of imitating the properties of normal, youthful skin...

“XPL can be applied to the skin and adheres quickly without the need to apply heat or light for activation”…

According to a report carried out by the Massachusetts General Hospital (United States), XPL or the so-called "second skin" will be welcomed as an excellent topical treatment to improve skin diseases such as dermatitis or eczema.
